Roofings Group Phase 4 Expansion Underway
Businessman Sikander Lalani has announced the process to expand Roofings Group at the Kampala Industrial Business Park (KIBP) in Namanve has commenced.
Lalani who recently celebrated his 79th birthday said the proposed phase 4 expansion a 150,000-tonnes-per-year cold rolling plant.
In 2010, Roofings Group started its operations with $2 million investment in an iron sheets plant in Lubowa, on Entebbe road.
Subsequently, the company expanded to include a wire galvanizing plant, a melt shop, and a plastic pipes plant under the Roofings Polypipes subsidiary, all at the Lubowa site.
In the third expansion phase, the steel group invested in a 150,000-tonnes-per-year cold rolling mill. By the end of the third phase, the company had invested more than USD 350 million in Uganda and provided employment for over 2,000 individuals.
While the cost of the fourth expansion phase has not been disclosed to the public, construction is being undertaken by China Communications Construction Company Ltd.
The project’s architects are Space and Places Ltd, with Roman Consult Ltd serving as the project’s civil and structural engineers. Quantity surveyors for the project are Construction Cost Associates, and L&S Company Ltd has been appointed as the electrical and mechanical engineers.
The new cold rolling mill is expected to begin operations by mid-2024, making Roofings Group the largest and most modern cold-strip complex in East and Central Africa.
In December 2022, Roofings Group entered into a contract with Danieli Group, an Italian equipment supplier to the metal industry. The contract covers the supply of a cold-rolling mill, hot-dip galvanizing equipment, color-coating technology, and a side-trimming line.
