Minister of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives Sanjay Tanna has advised Ugandans, particularly leaders and young people, to read Musevenomics, a book by Gen Salim Saleh.

Tanna made the remarks during a thanksgiving victory party upon his appointment as a Minister by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. The ceremony, which involved a business consultative meeting, was held in Mbale City last Friday. The function brought together ministers, Members of Parliament, cultural leaders, the business community, and members of the public mainly from the Eastern region.

Minister Tanna said Musevenomics provides valuable insights into Uganda’s economic transformation and the country’s vision of becoming a $500 billion economy by 2040. He recalled the hardships Ugandans experienced before 1986, including shortages of sugar, milk, salt, electricity, and poor road infrastructure.

Tanna said Uganda has made significant economic progress, becoming a net exporter of sugar, milk, food, and electricity due to deliberate government policies aimed at promoting economic growth and industrial development.

“As leaders, I want you to read Musevenomics and understand where we have come from, where we are today, and where we want to go as a country,” he said.

The minister added that one of the priorities of his ministry is to strengthen the oversight of cooperative societies to ensure that government resources directly benefit farmers and local communities. He said that the government has invested billions of shillings in cooperatives across the country, including in the Bugisu sub-region, and the beneficiaries must account for the funds.

“We are going to check on the levels of transparency and accountability. If government has given you billions of shillings, we shall ask what has been done with that money,” Tanna pledged.
