Ministry of Trade takes BUBU Campaign to Western Uganda

Minister of trade, industry and cooperative, Hon. Francis Mwebesa
As part of the implementation of the Buy Uganda Build Uganda (BUBU) policy, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives has organised BUBU Western Uganda Trade Show 2025.
The three-day event, starting July 25th to 27th July at Mbarara City Independence Park, will be under the theme, “Buy Uganda Build Uganda; Driving Growth Through Sustainable Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises.”
The campaign started with the mobilisation of local processors, manufacturers and commercial farmers from Tooro, Rwenzori, Kigezi, Ankole and Bunyoro regions. They have been urged to support local producers and service suppliers to increase the domestic market share of their products.
The Ministry of Trade Senior Commercial Officer and BUBU desk officer, James Makula, has encouraged local producers and service suppliers that the government is committed to supporting them to dominate the domestic market.
The mobilisation meetings were held in Mbarara City, Bushenyi, Kasese, Kabale, Fort Portal, Masindi, and Hoima from July 11 to 15, 2025.
BUBU is challenged by low production, failure to conform to quality standards and the negative mindset that local products were of poor quality or unavailable.
Since government and stakeholders started implementing the BUBU policy in 2017, “we have observed that many Ugandan consumers prefer locally made products, especially furniture, leather and leather products, iron and steel products, construction materials, cement, food and beverages, electric cables and conductors, and pharmaceuticals.”
The change is due to a government and partners’ deliberate effort to build the capacity of the local private sector, especially in the area of conformity to quality standards
