Uganda Makes Nuclear Energy Targets
The Minister of Energy and Mineral Development Minister, Ruth Nankabirwa, has revealed that Uganda is set to generate at least 1,000 megawatts of nuclear energy come 2031.
“We are looking at 50 percent renewable energy use, 40 per cent of which is going to be nuclear,” said Nankabirwa told the National Renewable Energy Conference that sat Speke Resort Munyonyo.
She revealed that nuclear energy is among the alternative energy sources the government is focusing on in its grand plan of scaling up renewable energy use in the country.
She noted that Uganda is working with the International Atomic Agency in the development of this resource strictly for energy use.
Uganda has secured a site in Buyende district, eastern Uganda to construct a multibillion dollar nuclear plant. Officials from the energy ministry recently visited the district to interact with the district officials and project affected persons.
