Bring Consumer Protection Bill – Tayebwa Tells Trade Ministry
The Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, has asked the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Cooperatives to ensure the Consumer Protection Bill is brought to Parliament for enactment.
Tayebwa, during Tuesday’s plenary, explained that the Bill, if passed into law, will protect Ugandans from consuming harmful substandard goods.
“Minister, remember you promised us on the Consumer Protection law which we said we needed it separate from the Competition Act, and I hope we shall use it effectively,” Tayebwa said to the trade minister.
“We need the Consumer Protection Act, we don’t want it to come as a private member’s bill, but members will move if you don’t fulfill what you promised,” Tayebwa added.
Tayebwa also informed Parliament that President Yoweri Museveni has assented to five bills that were sent to him by Parliament.
These include the Civil Aviation Amendment Bill 2024, the Judicature Amendment Bill 2023, The Explosives Act 2023, the Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances (Control) Act, 2023, and The Competition Act 2023.
“We really hope that these roles play a critical role in facilitating the smooth running of Government, especially the Competition,” he said.
