Uganda Saves $2.5m Monthly Energy Costs After Agago Electricity Commissioning
The Minister of State for Energy, Okaasai Opolot, on Wednesday commissioned the 83km-long 132kv Gulu-Agago Transmission Project at the Agago Substation in Pader District. This line was completed and energized on 18th November 2023 and evacuates power from the Achwa 83mw hydropower project.
Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL) said the Gulu-Agago Transmission Project, a project financed through a loan of EUR 40 million from the German Government via KfW, will save the government $2.5 million monthly energy costs while benefiting people in Gulu, Omoro, and Pader districts with reliable power supply.
The money from the Germans covered the cost of the transmission line and associated substations. The Uganda government financed the supervision, land acquisition, and Resettlement Action Plan (RAP) Implementation costs.
Joshua Karamagi, the Chief Executive Office of UETCL, revealed at the commissioning that the project consisting of a substation extension and transmission line construction was completed within 18 months by Larsen & Toubro Limited and KEC International Limited, the contractors, respectively.
“The commissioning signifies a milestone in Uganda’s energy infrastructure, aligning with national development plans and ensuring sustainable energy access for the populace,” Karamagi said.
“With the Gulu-Agago Transmission Project online, Uganda moves closer to achieving its energy goals, enhancing economic growth, and improving livelihoods through reliable electricity supply,” he added, elaborating.
Okaasai, the energy minister noted the newly commissioned Gulu – Agago Transmission Line supports the Energy Policy 2023 and the Energy Development Programme of the National Development Plan.
