The Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, Ruth Nankabirwa, and officials from Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA) have announced a 1.6 percent power reduction for the first quarter of 2024. 

The pronouncement was made on Friday 5th January 2024 at Uganda Media Centre in Kampala. 

The Chairperson of ERA, Sarah Wasagali said a tariff reduction of 1.6% is equivalent to a saving of Shs40.321 billion to electricity consumers.

Eng. Ziria Tibalwa Waako, the Chief Executive Officer of ERA, emphasized the Authority’s efforts towards affordability of electricity through a reduction in tariffs in this quarter.

Nankabirwa said the reduction in power tariffs ‘speaks to the government’s efforts for progressive gradual end-user tariff reduction to support industrialization for socio-economic transformation and improved welfare of society.’

Yaka meter phase out 

Nankabira also used the press conference to reveal that by October 24, Uganda’s Electricity Consumer’s Yaka (prepaid) meters will be migrated onto the New Token Identification System to be able to continue purchasing Units for their Electricity Supply seamlessly.

“We have set for ourselves a target to have all Uganda’s Electricity Consumer’s Yaka (prepaid) meters migrated onto the New Token Identification System by October 2024 to be able to continue purchasing Units for their Electricity Supply seamlessly,” he told journalists.

Adding: “This change is happening on a global scale and will affect all consumers on the Prepayment Metering system.”
