ERA reaffirms stable tariffs and promotes affordable clean cooking
The Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA) refutes misleading claims circulating on social media that electricity tariffs have been increased to the extent that UGX 10,000/= would purchase only four or five units.
The claim is false. The end-user electricity tariffs for the fourth quarter of 2026, covering October to December, have been approved and published. The approved rates remain unchanged.
ERA’s mandate and tariff-setting process
ERA is the statutory authority responsible for determining and approving electricity tariffs in Uganda.
UEDCL is a licensed electricity distribution company. It applies the approved tariffs when supplying and billing customers but does not independently set or change them.
Tariff setting is a regulated process.
ERA reviews relevant costs and economic conditions that affect electricity supply, including exchange rates, inflation, fuel prices, and the generation mix.
It assesses the information and tariff proposals before determining the rates that licensed providers may charge. Once approved, the tariff schedule is published for consumers and service providers to consult.
The Electricity Act, Cap 157, provides the legal basis for ERA’s tariff-setting and approval functions. The approved Q4 2026 schedule is available through ERA and UEDCL’s official channels.
