Government bans school trips
The Ministry of Education and Sports has suspended all school trips and educational outings countrywide with immediate effect.
According to the Acting Minister of Education and Sports, Dr John Chrysostom Muyingo, a temporary ban has been instituted effective Friday, July 17, 2026, following a tragic bus crash in the eastern district of Kapchorwa, which resulted in the death of 20 pupils from King David Junior School located in Ndejje, Makindye Division in Kampala.
The temporary ban is aimed at allowing the government to broadly evaluate the existing safety guidelines. The move is expected to allow the ministry to review policies regarding vehicle roadworthiness, licensed drivers, and adequate teacher supervision before allowing trips to resume.
Minister Muyingo said the decision to suspend school trips and outings was taken as a precautionary measure to protect the lives and safety of children while the government reviews existing guidelines governing school trips.
The ministry has directed headteachers and principals of education institutions, school management committees of primary schools, and boards of governors of secondary schools not to violate the temporary ban.
Therefore, parents and the general public are advised to report any school contravening the temporary pause.
