Uganda Participates in Global Meeting to Shape International Food Standards
The Ugandan delegation at the 48th Session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC48) in Rome – Italy,
Uganda, through the Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) is participating in the 48th Session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC48) in Rome – Italy, this week, joining global food safety and trade experts to develop international food standards that enhance consumer protection and fair trade. The Codex Alimentarius Commission, established by FAO and WHO, sets globally recognized standards to ensure safe, high-quality food and equitable market practices. Uganda’s participation reinforces the country’s commitment to protecting public health, enhancing market access for Ugandan products, and strengthening national food safety systems. Key issues under discussion include standards for contaminants, pesticide residues, food additives, nutrition and labelling, antimicrobial resistance, and emerging food technologies. Uganda is advocating for science-based, fair, and inclusive standards that reflect developing-country realities and regional agricultural priorities. The Ugandan delegation includes representatives from UNBS, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, and the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
