UNBS moves to tighten Sauna safety requirements

UNBS officials move to enforce safety requirements for Sauna
The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) Technical Committees; UNBS/TC 408 in charge of Occupational Health & safety and UNBS/TC 415 in charge of Cosmetology and Wellness have kicked off the revision process of Uganda Standard, US 2388:2022 Safety in saunas, steam baths and whirlpool baths – Requirements and guidance for use, to strengthen the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements.
This follows a recent sauna explosion in Buziga-Kampala, that left eight (8) lives fatally injured. Revision of the OHS requirements is aimed at preventing similar occurrences in the future by introducing stringent measures for risk management, equipment safety, worker training, and emergency preparedness. It will also enhance compliance to the Sauna and Steam bath standards by the operators, and regulation by the respective Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies.
